Narbonne 19th November
I started a blog early on the 19th, but then got
distracted talking about the day before, and didn’t ever get back to later in
the day. So basically we had a relatively quiet early morning before we all
saddled up and biked into Narbonne city centre for a look around.
We had a look
at some of the old buildings and shops on the opposite of the river from that
Hilary and I had explored the preceding day, before crossing the river again up
by a lock, and trying to visit the Tourist Info Centre which by now was closed
for lunch. Instead we went to the coffee shop/patisserie Hilary and I had
discovered the day before, and had coffee, and Hilary another strawberry tart.
We managed to spin things out long enough that the church we wanted to visit
had re-opened for the afternoon by the time we got back there, and the Tourist
Info Centre was also open. The church was another grand affair, not cathedral
or basilica standard, but beautiful stained glass, and a lovely courtyard
complete with gargoyle decorated façade. We had a brief look around some of the
other huge stone buildings including the arch bishop’s palace (now museum,
shop, gallery and I think partly council building).
Another quick visit to the tourist information centre
followed, before we hopped back on our bikes and pedalled back to the truck and
its warmth.
We had a quiet evening, playing word games and chatting,
before an early night in preparation for our departure in the morning.
