October 28th Puerto Gelves (near Seville)

28.10.11 Gelves

A very quiet relaxed day today. Up late, then a leisurely brunch of bacon, tomatoes, tostada, and pancakes for Hilary. The sun was out again, the wind absent and with that came the warmth It probably only reached mid 20’s maybe as high as 28, but it was lovely sitting out on a deck chair beside the river, enjoying the peace and quiet just reading and stitching. At about 2.30 Hilary and I ventured out to try to do some computer work at a McDonalds I had noticed last night, about 800m down the road. It was treacherous trying to get there as it was across the other side of the main road with no obvious way of getting there. After about 15 minutes of standing in the middle of a roundabout hoping vainly for a break in the traffic, we abandoned our plan and returned to the campervan. Even that was a mission with in places with no shoulder to ride on in places and traffic flying past. Thankfully we got back without mishap but I have said I won’t be taking Hilary out on the bike again from here, it just isn’t safe. She had a very pleasant time back here though riding her bike around the marina which is car free, and a bit exciting with twists and turns. She met up with a French boy who had been hanging out near our campervan since we arrived last night. I think he saw our number plate and Hilary and hoped he would be able to have a friend to ride with. He is smaller than Hilary, we both guessed him to be seven, possibly eight, and he appears quite lonely though he does have two siblings. When Hilary came in this evening having raced him around and round the marina, I said, “Did you two talk at all?” and she said, “He said, “Bonjour”, and I replied”. I said, “Did you say anything else?, like, “I don’t speak French, I’m from New Zealand”. She said, “No”, and that was the end of our conversation too.

This evening we pored over maps and DK books trying to work out what we are going to do for the next 3 months or so. We are a little weary, and feel as if we have had our fill of fine Spanish buildings, archaeology and the like, a bit like England with castles and fine properties, you get saturated after a while so that what should be stunning cities with amazing sights all become a bit tedious. So we are trying to plan what we can do that is of a different genre – we’ll have to see what transpires.
